முன்னுரை
போவோம் வாராய் ஸகியே
பூங்காவனம் தன்னை நாடி
மல்லிகை முல்லை ரோஜா
மணமுள்ள சம்பங்கியும்
என்று என் தாயார் நான் ஐந்து வயது சிறுமியாக இருந்தபோது கற்றுக் கொடுத்தார். தமிழகத்து கிராமங்களில் கவிதை நயம் வாய்ந்த எத்தனையோ பாடல்களைச் சிறு குழந்தைகள் பாடுவார்கள்.
பாட்டிமார்கள் தங்கள் பேரக் குழந்தைகளுக்குப் பாட்டு இட்டுக்கட்டிச் சொல்லித் தருவதும் உண்டு. என் தாயார் ருக்மிணி என் மகனுக்கு சிட்டுக் குருவியைக் காட்டி பாட்டுப் பாடுவார். பாடும்போது நடுவில் சங்கருக்கு சேதி சொல்லாயோ என்று அவனுடைய பெயரைச் சேர்த்துப் பாடுவார். குழந்தை சிரித்து மகிழ்வான். என்னுடைய பாட்டி மீனாட்சி கல்யாண விமரிசைகளைப் பாடிப் பேரக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு கதை சொல்லுவார். பரிமாரப்பட்ட உணவு வகைகளை அவர் வரிசையாகப் பாடும்போது நாங்கள் வாய்திறந்து கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருப்போம்.
சந்த்ர சூரியன்போல் சீறும் அப்பளாம்
நட்சத்திரம் போல் ஜவ்வரிசி கருடாம்
என்று அவர் பாடும் போது எண்ணெயில் அப்பளம் விரிந்து சுர்ரென்று சீறிப் பொரிவது மனக்கண்ணில் தோன்றும். இந்தப் பாடலை நாம் மறந்து விட்டோம்.
பெரிய நகரங்களில் சின்னஞ்சிறு குழந்தைகள் தங்கள் தாய் மொழியில் மழலைப் பாடல்கள் பாடாமல் ஆங்கிலத்தில் மட்டும் நர்ஸரி ரைம்ஸ் கற்றுக் கொள்கிறார்கள். தாய் மொழிப் பயிற்சியின் வழியாகக் கிடைக்க வேண்டிய அவரவர் வாழும் பிரதேசத்துக் கலாச்சாரமும் மரபுகளும் இலக்கிய நாட்டமும் குழந்தைகளுக்குக் கிடைக்காமல் போய் விடுகிறது. இது ஈடு செய்ய முடியாத இழப்பு.
தாய் மொழிப் பயிற்சிக்கு எளிய சொற்களைக் கொண்ட பாடல்கள் உதவுகின்றன என்பது கண்கூடு.
கவிமணி என்று அறிஞர்களால் புகழப்பட்ட தேசிகவிநாயகம் பிள்ளை அவர்கள் அற்புதமான குழந்தைப் பாடல்கள் எழுதியிருக்கிறார். அவருடைய பாடல்கள் சிலவற்றை இந்த ஒலிப்பேழையில் கேட்கலாம். கவிமணியைப் பின்பற்றி சமீப காலத்தில் எளிய பாடல்களை இயற்றியவர் குழந்தைக் கவிஞர் அழ. வள்ளியப்பா அவர்கள். தினசரி குழந்தைகள் பார்த்து அனுபவிக்கும் விஷயங்களை வெவ்வெறு சந்தங்களில் கவிதையாக இயற்றியிருக்கிறார். அழகை அனுபவிக்கச் செய்யும் பாடல்கள். சிறு குழந்தைகள் தாங்களே கண்டும் கேட்டும் அனுபவப்பூர்வமாக உணர்ந்த விஷயங்களை பற்றிய பாடல்கள். வள்ளியப்பா குழந்தையை அழைத்து, தன்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ள உலகத்தை ஊடுருவிப் பார்க்கவும் ஆராய்ந்து பார்க்கவும் தூண்டுகிறார். குழந்தை இலக்கியத்தில் அழ. வள்ளியப்பாவுக்கு ஒரு சிறப்பிடம் என்றும் உண்டு.
பிறந்த தினத்திலிருந்தே குழந்தைகளுக்கு நமது நாட்டுத் தொன்மையான ராக வடிவங்களை அறிமுகம் செய்து வைப்பது ஒரு சிறந்த கல்வி. கண்களால் பார்க்கும் போது குழந்தை எப்படி வடிவங்களைத் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறதோ, அது போல காதுகளால் கேட்கும் போது இசைக்கும் பல வழவங்கள் இருக்கின்றன என்பதைப் பிறந்த நாளிலிருந்து சங்கீதம் கேட்டு வளரும் குழந்தை புரிந்து கொண்டு விடுகிறது. புன்னாக வராளி, நாதநாமக்ரியா போன்ற ராகங்கள் பல நூற்றாண்டுகளாக தமிழ் நாட்டில் வர்ண மெட்டுகளாக மக்களிடையே புழங்கி வந்திருக்கின்றன.
தேர்ந்து எடுத்த குழந்தைப் பாடல்கள் சிலவற்றுக்கு கர்நாடக சங்கீத ராகங்களிலும் வர்ண மெட்டுகளிலும் இசையமைக்கப் பட்டிருக்கின்றன. வீணை, குழல், வயலின், மிருதங்கம், கடம், மோர்சிங், தாளம் முதலிய புழக்கத்தில் உள்ள இசைக் கருவிகளை தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருக்கிறோம். வாத்தியங்களின் ஒலி வடிவத்தையும் அறிமுகம் செய்து வைப்பது எங்கள் நோக்கம். ஏற்கனவே சென்னையில் உள்ள சில மாண்டிசோரி பள்ளிக் கூடங்களில் ஆசிரியர்கள் இந்தப் பாடல்களைக் குழந்தைகளுடன் பாடி வருகிறார்கள்.
முன்னணி மிருதங்க வித்வானாக விளங்கும் ஸ்ரீ அருண் பிரகாஷ் இந்த ஒலிநாடா தயாரிப்பதற்கு எடுத்துக் கொண்ட சிரத்தையை எவ்வளவு பாராட்டினாலும் தகும். பாடல்களின் எளிமை, அவற்றின் அழகு, இந்தப் பாடல்களை தேர்ந்தெடுத்திருப்பதன் நோக்கம் எல்லாவற்றையும் உணர்ந்து கொண்டு சுருக்கமாகவும், மனதில் நிற்கும்படியாகவும் பின்னணி இசை அமைத்திருக்கிறார்.
பாடியவர்கள், வாத்தியங்களை வாசித்தவர்கள் ஒலிப்பதிவு செய்தவர்கள் இவர்களுடைய ஒத்துழைப்பில்லாமல் இந்த ஒலி நாடாவைத் தயாரித்திருக்க முடியாது. அனைவருக்கும் எங்கள் மனம் நிறைந்த நன்றி.
தன்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ள உலகை அறிந்து கொள்ள ஆவல் ததும்பும் கண்களுடன் பரப்பரப்பான உள்ளத்துடனும் முயன்று கொண்டிருக்கும் குழந்தைகளுக்கு இந்த ஒலி நாடாவை சமர்ப்பிக்கிறோம்.

Introduction
‘Povom vaaraai sakhiye
Poongaavanam tanai naadi
Mallikai, mullai, roja Manamuila s.ampangiyum’
(‘Let’s go my friend
To the flower garden
Full of jasmine, roses
And fragrant sampangi’)
I learnt this song as a five-year old from my mother. Young children in Tamil Nadu used to sing many such songs rich in poetry. Those were the days when grandmothers made up songs to entertain their grandchildren. My mother Rukmini had a song for my son, which she addressed to the sparrows in our garden. ‘What news do you bring for Shankar?’ she would improvise, to the delight of the child.
My grandmother too delighted us grandchildren with her own mixture of stories and songs. Her rendition of ‘Meenakshi Kalyanam’ was a big hit, with its songs describing the delicacies served at the celestial wedding.
‘Appalams that sizzled
like the moon and the sun.
Sago crispies that sparkled like the stars’
she would sing and we would listen openmouthed, the crackle of golden appalams in boiling oil flashing by in our mind’s eye. Today we have forgotten these songs.
Children in the big cities no longer learn songs in their mother tongues, as they are only taught nursery rhymes in English. They are thus denied the exposure that learning their native languages can provide to the culture and traditions and love of the literature of the region where they live. This is an irreparable loss.
That simple songs can aid the learning of languages is self-evident. ‘Kavimani’ (‘A gem among poets’) Desika Vinayakam Pillai was an outstanding modern Tamil poet who composed several delightful songs for children.
Poet Azha. Valliappa followed in Kavimani’s footsteps and composed many simple little rhymes. Day-to-day events and experiences that children enjoy form the subject of his wide variety of rhymes – songs that celebrate beauty, songs that describe what children see, hear and experience. Valliappa invites the child to examine and explore his world. Azha. Valliappa will always have a special place in children’s literature.
Introducing our newborns to the contours of our ancient ragas is a great way of beginning their education. A child thus exposed to music from the moment he is born, learns that music has many forms just as he learns the many shapes of the things he sees from the day of his birth. Ragas like Punnaga Varali and Nadanamakriya have been part of the folk music repertoire of Tamil Nadu for centuries.
The songs featured here have been set to Carnatic ragas, folk tunes and rhythms. To introduce children to the different sounds of musical instruments, we have used those in vogue like the veena, flute, violin, mridangam, ghatam, morsingh and talam. Teachers in some of the Montessori schools of Chennai have been teaching children these songs.
K. Arun Prakash, a top class mridanga vidwan with a deep appreciation of the nuances of Carnatic music, has composed the background music, which rooted in classical music, has yet managed to capture the lilt and mood of the lyric each time. For a musician of his preeminent stature, Arun Prakash’s involvement in the project has been heartwarmingly wholehearted.
This undertaking would have been impossible without the enthusiastic co-operation of all the singers, musicians and technical experts behind it. Our heartfelt thanks to all of them. This is our offering to children everywhere, striving to absorb the world around them with eager eyes and thumping hearts.
