Dance and Music; reflections on the symbiosis

Sunday, 30th July 2017|2:00 pm EDT - 3:00 pm EDT

- $25

A lecture – demonstration by Preethi Ramaprasad

Preethi Ramparasad will conduct a lec-dem exploring the relationship between music and dance and how a dancer visualises music and transforms it into a four-dimensional mosaic.

This program is part of our series of events specifically organized to enable all the members of our community to be able to better understand and appreciate the traditional performing arts of India. Dance and music students, bring your dads and your brothers.

How did we get so far?
The storied past of Bharatanatyam is laden with musical interaction. It relies, maybe even depends on the ability to respond to music. From the dance compositions that were once performed at the temple flag-hoisting ceremonies, to the most heart-wrenching depictions of love, everything has stemmed from an intrinsic dialogue between dance and music. Preethi Ramaprasad explores this very link in a lecture demonstration. By embarking on a personal and cultural journey, she hopes to enhance what it means to experience these incredible arts as parts of a whole.

Preethi Ramaprasad is a multifaceted dancer who has toured India, Europe, and the U.S. She has been in both solo and group shows under her guru Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy. Some of her accolades include “All-Rounder Yuva Kala Bharati” from Bharat Kalachar, “Best Performer” from Parathasarathy Swami Sabha, “Guru Samyukta Panigrahi Endowment” from Krishna Gana Sabha, Trinity Festival Award, Bigel Research Travel Award, and the YoungArts Scholarship. She participates in workshops on the universality of Bharatanatyam at venues like Juilliard School of the Arts, Columbia University, and the American International School. A keen researcher, Preethi also studies the intersection of arts and agency in India. More information at preethiramaprasad.com.

N.B. This is the first of two special events on this day. Tickets purchased for one event will include both, so one need not purchase separate tickets for each event.
